Hands down my favorite concert of 2022. This was the year that I fell in love with so many Black, POC, and Queer rock artists that really don’t get enough credit for their artistry. Nova Twins is a London based band that is a combination of Nu-metal, punk, and rap rock. The rock duo has several albums – with headbangers to melodic songs that make you just feel seen.
Minneapolis originated, Gully Boys headlined for Nova Twins at this Irving Plaza performance in NYC. It was my first time hearing the remarkable female and non-binary group and I was completely blown away. This band has a fiery melodic sound that was quickly able to excite the crowd – their mix of pop and rebellious punk sounds immediately created a fan in me. Gully Boys definitely exceeded my expectations of a headliner with their beautiful vocals, blazing guitars, and incredible beats. They even came into the audience to Mosh during the Nova Twins slot!
Words can’t describe how incredible the Nova Twins truly were. With Amy Love’s electrifying vocals and guitar skills, and Georgia South’s red-hot bass tunes – the crowd was moshing, headbanging, and twerking. Their outfits were the embodiment of punk- full of different patterns, patches, chains, jewelry and trinkets. Their lyrics and sound resonated with some of the things that I had been feeling- wanting that safe haven to express the frustration and joy that comes in life. I got to privilege to meet with the duo before the show for signing and they were so friendly.
Growing up I had only seen mainly white, male rock artists perform in my hometown. This was a completely new experience for me, and it inspired me to actually see Black and Queer women and non-binary artists perform in a space full of love and support. This is note that it is well worth investing our time in supporting marginalized artists. Not only does it help our communities, but it also further keeps our music listening diversified.
The smaller venue allowed for an intimate show, and I really felt like the entire crowd was just a sea of punk rock comradery. It was the first time I had also seen a predominately all female mosh pit! There was such a profound energy at this concert that just felt so special. The Nova Twins definitely are a duo to see if you get a chance.
