The rock genre comprises a variety of subgenres- from goth rock and new wave, to alt-metal and grunge. As the decades go by, each genre changes with the addition of new artists with their individual uniqueness and flair. It’s one of the many reasons why this music genre is one of my favorites. Even though it may not sound the same as decades before – that’s because we as a society change over time. With new influences, experiences, and new ideas. Rock is an ever-changing category that constantly keeps us tuned in.
One important element of Rock music is the cultural influence by which many Black & Brown communities have curated over time. Hispanic & Latine artists have long yielded the ingenuity & passion in this category, as shown by its worldwide appreciation across the Diasporas. From Rock en Español to Chicano Punk, some earliest pioneers of the genre incorporated artistic styles from Latin & Hispanic origins.
People may be surprised to know that Rock music wasn’t always permitted globally. Governments worldwide have placed bans and censorship to prevent rock artists from performing throughout history, especially during times of peoples’ long fight towards democracy and liberation. But artists have prevailed, fighting back for their right to share their stories & experiences through their music.
Writing to you during the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month, I wanted to highlight a few contemporary Hispanic & Latine artists in the Alternative Rock genre that you are sure to enjoy. These artists dismantle the boundaries of the rock category, using their unique styles and cultural influences to create incredible original sounds.
